A cream sofa on a carved teak frame with fluted column arms, a show-wood top rail and a serpentine seat, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Column arms are worth choosing for a practical reason as well as a visual one: they are square and vertical, which means the sofa can sit tight against another piece of furniture or into a corner without a scrolled arm getting in the way.

They also give you a firm arm to push up from, which a rolled arm does not - something worth considering for anyone who will use the sofa daily.

The two-fabric arrangement shown - plain on the back, patterned on the seat - is one option; the whole piece can equally be made in a single cloth. Dimensions, fabrics and finish are all yours to set. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The polished top rail on this sofa is a piece of show-wood, which means it is furniture and upholstery at the same time - and the join between the two is the whole difficulty.

Where a covered frame meets a polished one, the cloth has to stop somewhere, and that stopping point is either neat or it is the first thing you see. The traditional method is a groove: a shallow channel is cut into the timber along the line where the upholstery ends, and the raw edge of the cloth is tucked down into it and held there, so the fabric appears to disappear into the wood.

Our artisans cut that groove before the timber is polished, and polish over and into it, so the finish runs continuously into the channel. If the groove is cut afterwards, its edges are bare timber and they darken over the years into a visible line.

The upholsterer then works to the polished rail without touching it - the cloth is tucked and set with the timber already finished, which takes considerably more care than upholstering first and polishing after, and is the only order of work that leaves both surfaces perfect.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: moulded show-wood top rail with a small carved crest; square fluted column arms; buttoned centre back panel; serpentine seat front; carved apron; turned tapered feet.

Show-wood: upholstery groove cut before polishing and finished over, so the cloth edge tucks into a polished channel.

Seat: single long serpentine cushion over a sprung and webbed platform.

Upholstery: one fabric or two, as you prefer.

Finish: champagne frame with a darker polished top rail as photographed; other finishes available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Show-wood and upholstery need opposite handling, so this sofa is packed in two zones.

The polished top rail and the fluted column arms are faced with a soft clean layer and then edge-protected along their full length, because a polished surface shows a scuff as a shine rather than as a scratch.

The upholstered surfaces are covered with a clean breathable wrap, and the buttoned back is given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons.

The cushion travels wrapped separately to keep its serpentine shape, and the turned feet are wrapped and blocked so the weight rests on the rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabrics and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, polishing, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order and we plan the crate and route around them before the sofa leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the column arms and their joints, the back frame, the top rail and the apron and foot fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Show-wood can be re-polished locally over the years, and covers can be remade without disturbing the frame - the upholstery groove means a new cover tucks into the same channel as the original. We can carry out that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
