A designer sofa in carved teak with a peaked openwork crest, shaped fan back panel and gilded plinth, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A peaked silhouette gives a room a focal point in a way a flat-topped sofa cannot, which makes this a good choice as the principal piece in a seating group - the chairs and tables around it can then be quieter.

The low arms are worth noticing: dropping the arm height relative to the back exaggerates the height of the peak, and it also makes the sofa easier to sit sideways on or to lie along.

The two-fabric arrangement - patterned centre panel, plain wings - is one option, and a single cloth works equally well. Fabrics, dimensions and finish are all yours to set, and matching chairs can be made as a suite. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

The peak of this crest is the highest point on the sofa and it is also the single most vulnerable piece of carving on it, so the timber behind the design is chosen before the design is drawn on it.

A peak means the carving converges toward a point, and at that point the grain of any board must run somewhere - if it runs across, the tip is short grain and will break at the first knock; if it runs vertically, the tip is strong but the wide base of the triangle then has grain running out at both lower corners.

So the crest is built as three pieces: a central vertical member carrying the peak with its grain running up through the point, and two side sections with their grain following the slope of each shoulder. The joints between them fall along the lines of the carved scrolls, so the pattern covers them.

Every part of the crest therefore has long grain running in the direction that part needs it. It is the same principle that lets a stone mason build an arch out of separate blocks - the shape is achieved by assembly rather than by asking one piece to do everything.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: peaked openwork crest built in three sections with grain oriented to each part and joints hidden along the carved scrolls; shaped fan back panel with carved surround; swept upholstered wings; low scrolled arms; gilded pierced plinth over a dark moulded base.

Seat: long cushion over a sprung and webbed platform.

Upholstery: one fabric or two, as you prefer; pattern set out about the centre line of the fan panel.

Finish: gilding with a dark base band as photographed; other finishes available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

The peak is the tallest and most exposed point on this sofa, so it is packed first and protected furthest.

Foam is worked into the piercings of the crest so the carving is supported from within, and the peak itself is given a moulded cap that stands proud of it, so any contact with the crate reaches the cap rather than the carving.

The upholstered surfaces are covered with a clean breathable wrap, and the fan panel is given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into its shaped face.

The pierced plinth is packed from within its openings and the sofa blocked so its weight rests on the plinth frame. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabrics and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, gilding, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order. The peak makes this the tallest sofa we build, and its height decides the crate, so we need that information before production.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the plinth frame and base, the wing and arm structure, the back frame and every joint in the three-section crest.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Cushions can be refilled and covers renewed over the years without disturbing the frame, and the fan panel can be recovered on its own if you ever want to change the pattern while keeping the plain wings as they are.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
