White Sofa Set in Carved Teak with a Medallion Back and Antique Finish

The medallion at the centre of this back is carved as a separate panel and set into the frame, and the reason is grain direction.

The back rail of a sofa runs horizontally, so its grain runs side to side. The medallion, with its urn and upright foliage, reads vertically. Carve it directly into the horizontal rail and every vertical element in the design would be cut across the grain - which means short fibres at every stem and leaf edge, and a surface that will never take a clean cut or hold a crisp arris.

So our artisans carve the medallion in its own piece of timber with the grain running vertically, to suit the design, and let it into a recess cut in the rail. The joint is then covered by the carved scrolling that frames the oval.

It is more work than carving straight into the rail, and it is the difference between foliage that stays sharp for a lifetime and foliage that softens within a few years of being dusted.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Finish: antiqued white, with the depth of toning in the recesses set to your preference - lightly toned for a crisp effect, more strongly for an aged one.

The frame is faced with a clean non-transferring layer over its whole surface before any foam or tape is applied, and the upholstery is covered with a breathable wrap.

The medallion is the highest relief on the piece and is capped separately with shaped foam. The pierced apron is packed with foam worked into its openings so it is supported from within.

The buttoned panels are given standoff boards on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons, and the cushion travels wrapped separately. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish depth are confirmed in writing, with a sample panel agreed for the antiquing. You get a realistic production window then and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, finishing, upholstery and crating.
