A Chesterfield is defined by its arms - rolled, and level with the back rather than lower - and by deep buttoning across every upright surface. This one is built that way on a solid teak frame, in taupe velvet, as a corner unit.

It is made to your room. Send us the two wall lengths, the door and window positions and how many people you want to seat, and we build the runs to those dimensions. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed with you in writing before production begins.

Taupe velvet is shown. This design also works particularly well in leather, which is the traditional Chesterfield material and ages into a patina rather than wearing out - tell us which you prefer and we will send samples of both.

The carved brackets and legs are cream here and can be finished in any tone, or in the same colour as the frame for an even quieter piece.

This is handcrafted Indian luxury from master Indian artisans. Solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty, the sofa is covered for life against termite damage, and delivery anywhere in India is free with guaranteed dent-free arrival.

The Chesterfield's deep buttoning was never decorative to begin with. Early upholstery was stuffed with horsehair, and horsehair migrates - it drifts to wherever the sitter's weight pushes it, leaving hollows in some places and lumps in others. Buttoning divided the surface into small compartments so the stuffing could not travel. The diamond pattern is simply what the cover does between the fixing points.

Modern fillings do not migrate, so the buttoning survives purely for its looks - and because it does something no flat upholstery can: it turns a large plain surface into a field of light and shadow that changes as you move past it.

What our master Indian artisans keep from the original is the discipline about where carving belongs on a piece like this. The Chesterfield form is about the upholstery, so the teak shows only at the arm brackets and the legs - the two places where the frame is genuinely doing visible work. Adding a carved crest to a Chesterfield would be decorating a design whose entire argument is that it does not need decorating.

Material: Solid teak frame throughout, including back, arms, corner section and legs.

Buttoning: Deep and continuous across the entire back, round the corner without a break, and over the outside of both rolled arms.

Arms: Rolled outward and down in a full curve, level with the back in the Chesterfield manner, finishing flush with the seat.

Seat: Long plain cushions without tufting, for comfort against the buttoned surrounds.

Corner: Built as a full seat rather than a filled angle, so it can be used properly.

Carving: Carved scroll bracket beneath each arm and carved corner legs, picked out in cream.

Upholstery: Shown in taupe velvet; also made in leather, which is the traditional material for this form, and in any fabric and colour.

Sizes: Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Velvet crushes permanently under pressure and buttoned velvet shows it worst, so every upholstered surface is bagged in a breathable cover and packed with rigid support standing clear of the fabric.

The rolled arms are the most exposed part of the piece and are supported along their full curve rather than at points, since a flattened roll cannot be pushed back into shape.

The carved cream brackets beneath the arms stand proud of the upholstery and are collared individually - and pale finishes show scuffs, so they are covered first in a soft non-marking layer.

Seat cushions travel separately so nothing compresses them. Carved legs are wrapped individually and fittings pouched.

The sofa travels in sections labelled in assembly order and crated together with handling instructions. Every photograph on this page shows the actual sofa before packing - not a render.

Delivery is free anywhere in India and included in the price you are quoted, with no freight, packing or handling charge added later.

Production begins once your dimensions, upholstery and finish are confirmed in writing. We give you a realistic timeline then and send photographs of your own sofa as the frame is built and the buttoning worked - the buttoning is the part worth watching on this design.

On arrival the sections are carried in and assembled in your room, the frame levelled, the arms and buttoning checked over and the cushions placed. Tell us your lift dimensions, staircase turns and doorway widths when you order and we size the sections to your access. We guarantee dent-free arrival, and if anything is not right, tell us and we will make it right.

The solid teak frame and joinery are covered for 20 years - the back frame, both arms, the corner section, the legs and every joint between them. On a piece where almost nothing is visible except upholstery, the frame is the entire structure, and it is built to be worth re-covering rather than replacing.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with it for as long as you own the sofa, backed by teak's own resistance and confirmed in writing.

Deep buttoning is skilled work and it is worth having the original plot when the time comes to renew it. We keep the specification of your exact sofa on file - dimensions, buttoning grid, button spacing round the corner - so a re-cover follows the same pattern rather than being set out afresh. Cushions can be refilled at the same time. Our own master Indian artisans do the work and explain what it involves before starting.
