A stage throne chair in gilded solid teak with a tall arched back and rust velvet upholstery. Its proportions are deliberately narrow and vertical, which is what makes it work on a raised stage - a wide chair spreads and loses its silhouette from a distance, while this one holds a clean shape against a backdrop.

Master Indian artisans carve every element by hand from seasoned solid teak. The arch and its spandrels are cut from solid stock, the flanking columns are turned and then carved, and the plinth panels are worked individually across the front and both sides.

It is made to order. Choose the velvet, the gold or silver tone, the back height and the seat width, and set the cushion arrangement. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production. It comes with a 20-year warranty on the teak frame and joinery, a lifetime warranty against termite damage, free PAN-India delivery with guaranteed dent-free arrival, and multi-layer protective packaging.

This chair stands on a plinth rather than on legs, and that changes the first thing the workshop has to get right: the base has to be dead flat, and flatter than you would think necessary.

A chair on four legs is forgiving. If one leg is a hair long it rocks slightly and the eye never notices, because a leg is thin and the error stays at the floor. A plinth is different - it is a wide continuous frame, and any twist in it is transmitted straight up into the back. The back on this chair is more than twice the height of the seat, so a twist of a millimetre across the base becomes several millimetres of lean at the top, and the crest visibly points off to one side.

So before the plinth goes anywhere near the rest of the chair, it is checked for wind - two straight sticks laid across it at opposite ends, and the maker sights along their top edges from one end. If the sticks appear parallel, the frame is flat. If one appears tilted against the other, the frame is twisted, and it goes back to be corrected before anything is built on it.

It is a two-minute check with two pieces of scrap wood, done before hours of carving are committed. Skip it, and the error is only visible once the chair is standing on a stage in front of four hundred people.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved and hand-turned by master Indian artisans, with traditional joinery at every junction.

Back: tall arched frame filled with foliate carving around an upholstered panel, with a carved figure at the apex.

Columns: turned and carved columns either side of the back, capped with finials.

Seat: upholstered platform, supplied with a quilted bolster and two round tasselled cushions.

Base: solid carved plinth with rosette panels and moulded borders on the front and both sides, on carved bun feet.

Upholstery: rust velvet as photographed. Any velvet or fabric can be used instead, including your own material.

Finish: hand-applied gold over the carving. Silver, champagne, antiqued tones or plain polished teak are also available.

Size: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are of the actual product, not renders.

A tall narrow chair is top-heavy in a carton, so the packing is designed around keeping the back supported rather than merely wrapped.

A foam frame runs around the outer edge of the arch and down both columns, so any side load is taken at the perimeter and never across the carved spandrels. The apex figure and the column finials each get their own shaped collar. The plinth panels are protected with a continuous foam strip on all three carved faces so pressure is spread rather than landing between the rosettes.

A soft non-abrasive layer covers all the gilded surfaces first so nothing coarse touches the finish. Corrugated panels then build a rigid shell around the whole chair, with the plinth blocked and braced so the chair's weight sits on its base rather than on the back. The outer carton is edge-reinforced. Velvet, bolster and both round cushions travel under a breathable cover that keeps dust off without pressing the pile. Everything comes off by hand, no blades needed.

Free PAN-India delivery is included - no zone rates, no distance surcharge, no freight line at checkout. The chair costs the same delivered to Raipur as to Rajahmundry.

Dent-free arrival is guaranteed. It leaves in multi-layer protective packaging, travels with handlers briefed on gilded and carved furniture, and is checked at every transfer point. If anything is not right when you open it, tell us and we make it right - the guarantee sits with us and not with the transporter.

Because it is made to order, production begins once your velvet, finish and measurements are confirmed in writing. If the chair is for a fixed date, tell us at enquiry and we will confirm in writing whether the timeline can be met before you commit. You get updates through carving, gilding and upholstery, and a dispatch note with an expected delivery window.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty. On this chair that covers the plinth and its panels, the seat frame, the flanking columns, the arched back and the joints that hold it upright. If a joint opens or a member fails within those twenty years, we repair or replace it.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with it and never expires. Teak's natural oils are what keep termites away, and our seasoning and finishing routine is designed to preserve them, so the timber is guaranteed for as long as the chair is yours.

Chairs like this are often used season after season by venues and decorators, and kept afterwards by families who bought them for one occasion. The warranty is the same in either case. It holds because the chair is built start to finish in our own workshop by the master Indian artisans who make every piece we sell, from timber we season ourselves. Registration is automatic with your order.
