Overview of this leather headboard luxury bed

This luxury bed is built in solid teak with a carved crest, scrolled headboard wings, carved scroll corners at the foot and a solid panelled footboard, all finished in a warm mahogany-toned polish. The headboard carries a deep-buttoned tan upholstered panel; the two matching bedside chests repeat the moulded panel fronts and carved feet.

Pairing a leather headboard with a solid wood footboard is a deliberate split. The head of the bed is where the body rests, so it is upholstered. The foot of the bed is where luggage is set down, where a bedcover is thrown, and where feet knock, so it is solid timber with a moulded panel that can be polished rather than fabric that cannot.

This is a warmer and more restrained set than a gilded bed. It suits bedrooms with wooden flooring, warm lighting, and other timber furniture already in the room, and it sits comfortably in a home where the rest of the interior is not French or ornate. Custom sizes are made to order in king size, queen size, double or any dimension you specify.

The story of the buttoned leather back

The deep-buttoned leather back is a nineteenth-century invention that has outlived almost everything designed alongside it. It appeared in gentlemen's clubs, libraries and railway carriages, where furniture had to survive constant use by people who did not own it. Leather was chosen because it could be wiped, and the deep buttoning was chosen because it held the horsehair stuffing in place through decades of abuse.

India encountered the form through exactly those settings: club chairs, court furniture and administrative offices, and local workshops learned to make it because imported pieces could not be repaired locally. What survived in Indian workshops is the full method, including how to cut and dampen the leather so it folds into the button wells without creasing at the edges.

Leather is harder to tuft than fabric, because it does not stretch equally in all directions and it will not forgive a mistake; a hole punched in the wrong place stays there. Our artisans set each button by hand and work the folds by hand as the panel is stretched. Handcrafted Indian luxury of this kind is judged on whether the folds run evenly from button to button, and that is worth looking at closely on any leather bed you consider.

We do not publish fixed dimensions or weight, because each bed is built to the buyer's mattress and room. Send your mattress measurements and available wall width and we will confirm the finished footprint in writing before production begins.

Packaging

Leather needs to breathe in transit. It is wrapped in a breathable non-woven cloth rather than in plastic sheeting, because a sealed wrap traps moisture against the surface and can leave marks that take weeks to fade. A foam layer then sits over the buttons so the tufting is never compressed against a crate wall.

The polished carving and the solid footboard panel are wrapped separately in foam, with additional padding at the headboard crest, the scroll wings and the carved feet. No adhesive tape touches a polished or upholstered surface, since tape residue on a hand-applied polish cannot be removed without disturbing the finish.

The bed and both chests travel in wooden crates built for these pieces, internally braced, with drawers secured shut and drawer fronts individually padded. Hardware is bagged, labelled by component and fixed inside the main crate. Crate dimensions can be confirmed before dispatch if your access is restricted.

Shipping

We deliver this bed across India and accept international orders. It is made to order, so dispatch follows the production window confirmed to you in writing when the order is placed.

Indian deliveries travel by covered transport with crates braced against movement and are delivered to your address. The carved headboard is the largest single component; confirm your lift dimensions and staircase turns before production so we can plan for access, and where it is tight the headboard can be built to separate at a concealed joint behind the upholstery line.

Home assembly is arranged in most Indian cities. If the bed has travelled in cold or damp conditions, let the leather come to room temperature before you handle it firmly, since cold leather creases more readily. International orders are quoted per destination with export-grade crating and full documentation; duties and taxes at destination are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame, the joinery and the hand carving of the bed and both chests against manufacturing defects. If a joint loosens, a rail fails, a drawer runner gives way or a carved element cracks through a fault in the making, we repair or replace it.

Upholstery workmanship, including button anchoring, panel tension and the evenness of the folds, is warranted against defects. Natural leather characteristics are not defects: grain variation, small healed scars, and colour that deepens with use are properties of a natural material. Genuine leather also stretches slightly where it is regularly leaned against, which is expected. Scratches, staining, damage from pets and fading from direct sunlight are not covered.

The hand-applied polish is warranted against lifting or flaking from defective application, and can be repaired in place if scratched. Damage from moisture, chemical or alcohol-based cleaners, independently arranged transport or third-party repairs is outside the warranty. Full terms are confirmed in writing with your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Leather wipes clean, does not hold dust in a pile and develops a patina rather than looking worn, which makes it the easier choice in a dusty city or a household with allergies. Fabric is softer and warmer to lean against, and offers far more colour choice. Both are available on this carved teak frame.

Dust it weekly with a dry cloth and wipe occasionally with a barely damp one. Never use alcohol, solvent cleaners or furniture polish, which strip the finish and cause cracking. Condition genuine leather once or twice a year with a proper leather conditioner, and keep the bed out of direct sunlight, which dries and fades it.

Genuine leather lasts far longer, breathes better in heat and improves with age, but costs more and needs occasional conditioning. Good leatherette costs less and needs almost no care, but has a finite life before the surface coating crazes. We build this bed in either and confirm which you have chosen in writing before production.

Because the foot of the bed takes the abuse. Luggage is set down there, bedcovers are thrown over it and feet knock it. A solid timber panel can be polished back if it is marked; an upholstered panel in the same position wears out. This design puts upholstery where the body rests and timber where the impact is.

Genuine leather stretches slightly where it is regularly leaned against, which is normal and part of how it settles. What should not happen is slackness across the whole panel, which comes from a frame that moves or fixings that pull loose. That is what solid teak behind the panel and hand-set buttons are there to prevent.

Yes. King size, queen size, double or a custom dimension, with hydraulic lift storage or side drawers built into the base while the leather headboard, carved frame and panelled footboard stay as shown. Send your mattress weight with its dimensions so the lift struts are specified correctly.
