Storage beds are widely sold and poorly explained, so here is the practical comparison.

Hydraulic lift raises the entire platform on gas struts, opening one large compartment the full size of the bed. It gives the most volume and is the easiest to open - two fingers lift it - but the struts are a mechanical component with a service life, and they must be sized to the weight of your mattress. A hydraulic bed fitted with struts rated for a light foam mattress will not lift a heavy spring one.

Box storage is the same compartment without struts. Cheaper, nothing to fail, but the platform and mattress must be lifted manually, which realistically means it gets opened rarely.

Drawers in the side rails are easiest for daily use - shoes, linen, everyday things - but they take less volume, and they need clearance in front to pull out, which rules them out where a bed sits close to a wall or wardrobe.

Packaging and Transit Protection

A storage bed has more components than a plain one - headboard, foot rail, side rails, storage platform, base panels, struts or drawer boxes, feet and fittings - and every one is crated and labelled against the assembly drawing so nothing is mismatched on site.

The headboard travels flat in a cross-braced crate with rigid boards on both faces, its tufted leather panels protected by standoff blocking bridging over the buttons and covered in soft breathable cloth so the leather can breathe. Gas struts ship immobilised and boxed separately, never loose. Drawer boxes travel with their runners fitted but blocked so they cannot slide. Reeded surfaces are edge-protected, since a knocked reed cannot be repaired invisibly. All crates corner-guarded, foam-blocked, marked for orientation and lifting points, photographed sealed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Before manufacture we need your exact mattress dimensions and, critically for a hydraulic bed, your mattress weight - struts are sized to it, and a strut set matched to the wrong weight either will not lift or will not stay down. Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery, the storage platform structure and the hand-carving. Gas struts on a hydraulic bed are a mechanical component with their own manufacturer warranty, which we pass to you; they are wear items and will need replacement at some point in the bed's life, which is normal and easily done.

Do not overload a hydraulic compartment. Struts are sized to lift the platform and mattress, not the platform, mattress and eighty kilos of stored goods - overloading is the commonest cause of strut failure and of a platform that will no longer stay up. Never let a child operate or play near a lifting platform, and always lower it under control rather than letting it drop. Ventilate the storage compartment periodically by leaving it open for an hour - a sealed box under a bed collects moisture in humid weather, which is bad for stored linen. Wipe leather panels with a barely damp cloth and dry at once; dust gilded carving with a dry soft brush only.
