The story of the bed end bench

The bench at the foot of the bed is one of the oldest pieces of bedroom furniture, and its original purpose was storage. In European and Indian households alike, a chest stood at the foot of the bed holding linen, blankets and valuables, doubling as a seat and as the only piece a servant or visitor could use without entering the room proper. The upholstered bench is that chest with the lid softened.

It survived because the function survived. Dressing has always required somewhere to sit that is not the bed, and heavy bedcovers have always needed somewhere to go at night. In cold-weather households the bench also held the extra quilt within reach; in Indian homes it more often holds the day's clothes and the bedcover, which is the same problem in a warmer climate.

Our artisans build the bench as a matched piece rather than a generic stool: the same carving vocabulary, the same finish batch, the same upholstery and tufting pattern as the bed. Handcrafted Indian luxury is easiest to spot in supporting pieces, because that is where a workshop under time pressure cuts the carving short and hopes nobody looks.

We do not publish fixed dimensions or weight, because the bed, bench and chest heights are all built around your mattress. Send the mattress length, width and thickness with your room plan and we will confirm every finished dimension in writing before production.

Packaging

White finishes show transfer marks from packing materials more than any other colour, so nothing dyed or printed touches a surface on this set. Every polished white face is wrapped first in a clean, undyed non-woven cloth, and no adhesive tape is applied to a finished or upholstered surface at any point.

The pierced carved crest on the headboard is the most fragile element in the set, because openwork carving has thin sections with air behind them. It is packed with foam supporting the piercing from both sides so no load can be applied across an unsupported span.

The bench, the two bedside chests and the bed components are each wrapped and crated separately, with drawers secured shut and drawer fronts individually padded. Crates are built for these pieces rather than in stock sizes, internally braced, with hardware bagged and labelled by component inside the main crate. Crate dimensions can be confirmed to you before dispatch on request.

Shipping

We deliver this set across India and accept international orders. It is made to order, so dispatch follows the production window confirmed to you in writing when the order is placed.

Indian deliveries move by covered transport with all crates braced against movement, delivered to your address. The carved headboard with its crest is the tallest component and is usually what a lift cannot take, so confirm your lift height and staircase turns before production. Where access is restricted the crest can be built to detach at a joint concealed within the carving.

Home assembly is arranged in most Indian cities and covers the bed, the bench placement and both chests. On a white finish we would strongly recommend using our team rather than a general handyman, since a scuff on white shows immediately and cannot simply be polished out. International orders are quoted per destination with export-grade crating; duties and taxes at destination are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak structure, the joinery and the hand carving of the bed, the bench and both bedside chests against manufacturing defects. If a joint loosens, a carved element cracks, a bench leg fails or a drawer runner gives way through a fault in the making, we repair or replace it.

Upholstery workmanship on the headboard panel and the bench seat, including button seating and panel tension, is warranted against defects. Fabric wear, staining, marks from hair oil or cosmetics and fading in sunlight are not covered. White upholstery and a white finish both show marks sooner than darker alternatives; this is a property of the colour you have chosen, not a manufacturing fault.

The white finish is warranted against flaking or lifting caused by defective application. Gradual mellowing of white towards a warmer tone with age and light is normal for a hand-applied finish and is not a defect. Damage from moisture, chemical cleaners, independently arranged transport or third-party repairs is outside the warranty. Full terms are confirmed in writing with your order.
