Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror in warm gold, built as an oval mirror plate set within a deep rectangular frame. The design language is late eighteenth-century French: a carved ribbon bow centred on the top rail, floral swags running from it down into the corners, dense flower and leaf carving filling the corner blocks, and a stepped, beaded outer moulding that gives the frame genuine projection off the wall. Between the oval aperture and the rectangle sits a plain reeded field, which is what keeps the ornament from crowding the glass.

It is made for rooms where a mirror needs presence but not drama - a bedroom wall, a dressing area, a formal living room above a chest or bureau, a guest room. The rectangular outline hangs comfortably alongside pictures and panelling, while the oval plate keeps the reflection soft and centred. Every flower head is carved individually, so the corners never read as repeated moulding. The gold can be taken warmer, more antiqued or into a dark wood polish to suit the room.

The Story Behind This Mirror

The hardest part of this frame is the part most people never look at: the transition from oval to rectangle. Cut the aperture badly and the eye reads the frame as two unrelated shapes stuck together. So the carver sets the oval out geometrically first, then works the reeded field around it so the curve resolves into the straight rails without a visible fight.

The ornament comes next. The ribbon bow at the crest is carved from the solid with its loops undercut, so light passes behind them and the ribbon looks tied rather than drawn on. The swags are cut as continuous runs, each flower head shaped on its own axis - some facing out, some turned away - because real flowers on a garland do not all face the front. The corner blocks are the densest carving on the piece and are cut last, when the carver can see how much weight the corners need to balance the crest.

Then it is hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold laid in coats and rubbed back by hand at the bead lines and flower tips, and the oval plate fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

On this frame the fragile points are the undercut ribbon loops at the crest and the individually carved flower heads in the swags and corner blocks - all of them stand proud of the frame and all of them snap if something presses on them. Each is wrapped individually in high-density foam and taped clear of the carving so no adhesive touches gilding. The oval plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board cut to the rectangle, so the glass is supported right to the frame edge rather than only across the aperture.

The frame is then sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so it cannot move on a long road journey. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed. We photograph the piece wrapped and the crate closed and share those images before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and inspect the crest and corner carving before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, moving to the longer end if you enlarge the frame or ask for deeper corner carving, since the flower work is the slowest stage. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the carving is closed and again after gilding, so you approve the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so the route can be planned. We advise on hanging hardware suited to your wall type; a deep frame hangs further off the wall and the fixing needs to account for that. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making rather than through impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair, we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage are outside the assurance.

Care is simple. Use a clean dry soft brush through the flower heads, the ribbon loops and the swags, where a cloth will catch and can snap a petal. A soft dry cloth is right for the reeded field and the stepped outer moulding. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - gold that has been rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the plate so liquid does not run under the oval aperture and behind the glass. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources and air-conditioner outflow. Mount on a solid wall with anchors rated well above the mirror weight and check the fixings once a year.
