A Corona Instead of a Four-Poster

Draped beds have an obvious appeal and a less obvious problem in Indian homes. A four-poster with a full canopy puts a fabric ceiling directly above where you sleep. It collects dust, it makes a ceiling fan awkward or unusable, and unless the room has real height it presses down on the bed and makes the space feel smaller than it is. Plenty of people buy one anyway and then live with the compromise, which is a shame because the compromise is avoidable.

The corona solves it by moving the entire structure to the wall. A carved crown is fixed above the headboard and the drapes are hung from it to fall outward and back, so what you get is the framing effect of a canopy without anything overhead. The fan runs normally, nothing hangs over the mattress, and a room with a standard ceiling still works. It is also considerably less imposing to live with day to day than a four-poster, while photographing every bit as well. The corona, the headboard lobes and the footboard cartouche are all carved from solid teak by hand by master Indian artisans, and the images here show the actual piece.

Packing a Wall-Mounted Crown and Petal Lobes

The corona is the smallest and most vulnerable component in this shipment, and small components are the ones that get lost or crushed in a large furniture delivery. It travels in its own dedicated crate rather than inside the bed packaging, contour-padded so nothing rests on the projecting carved crest, with its fixings packed alongside it so nothing arrives without the parts needed to install it. The drapes are packed separately again, folded rather than compressed, in clean undyed wrapping that cannot transfer colour into pale fabric.

The headboard is the awkward piece to pack, because the carved petal lobes project outward from the centre panel and their outer edges stand proud in a way that nothing else on a bed does. Each lobe is individually wrapped and rigid-guarded along its outer profile, and no strapping runs across any of the buttoned or quilted surfaces. The solid ivory footboard is face-protected across its whole area, since a flat pale panel shows every mark, and the scrolled feet are guarded individually. Everything is crated and strapped, with the two chests boxed separately. Dent-free, unmarked and complete, or we make it right.

Production time is set by the carving and the multi-stage ivory and gold finishing; we give you a realistic window once your specification is confirmed and will tell you at enquiry if a fixed date cannot be met. Warranty, and What the Wall Has to Do

The solid teak frame and joinery of the bed, the headboard, the footboard, the corona and both bedside chests are warranted for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the life of the piece with no expiry. One thing sits outside our control and we would rather be direct about it: the corona is fixed to your wall, and the fixing depends on what that wall is made of. We supply appropriate fixings and install it, but if the wall is hollow, poorly built or has been previously chased for services, that is a limitation of the building rather than of the bed. Tell us the wall construction at enquiry and we will specify accordingly.

The ivory and gold finish, the upholstery, the foam and the drapes are outside the structural warranty, as they wear with use. Drapes in particular are a consumable over a long enough horizon; they collect dust, they fade in sunlight and they will eventually need replacing or cleaning, which is normal rather than a fault. We remake drapes, reupholster and refinish our own beds at any point in their life at an honest price. Keep the bed indoors, away from prolonged direct sun, and do not modify the frame or the corona fixing yourself.
