A blue and ivory sofa on a carved teak frame, with a buttoned centre back, openwork apron and serpentine seat, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

A pale frame with a coloured upholstery is the easiest version of this style to live with, because the colour can be changed later without the frame ever looking wrong. An ivory frame sits happily with blue, green, rose, stone or gold, so recovering the sofa in ten years is a free choice rather than a constrained one.

The scatter cushions are part of the design rather than an afterthought - the round bolster and the pair of patterned squares are sized to the back height so they support the small of the back at a useful point.

Fabric, cushion count and dimensions are all yours to set, and matching chairs can be made as a suite. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Deep buttoning on a curved back is set out on the frame, not on the fabric - and the grid is not square.

A buttoned panel pulls the covering inward at each button and lets it stand proud between them, which means the fabric travels further than the flat distance from one button to the next. If the buttons are marked out at equal spacings on the finished cover, the pleats between them come out uneven and the diamonds distort.

So our artisans mark the button positions on the timber back frame first, with the spacing calculated to include the extra material each fold will consume - more where the back curves, less where it is flat. The covering is then cut oversized to match, and each button is pulled down to its marked position on the frame.

The pleats that form between them are laid by hand as the work progresses, each one folded downward so that dust settles on the outside of the fold rather than collecting inside it. That single decision is why a well-made buttoned back still looks crisp after years, and it is invisible until you look for it.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: shaped back frame with a deep-buttoned centre panel and plain side panels; scrolled arms; openwork carved apron; carved scroll feet.

Buttoning: positions marked out on the timber frame with allowance for the material each fold consumes, pleats laid by hand and folded downward.

Seat: single serpentine cushion following the shaped front rail, over a sprung and webbed platform.

Finish: ivory frame with fine gilding as photographed; other finishes available.

Upholstery: fabric of your choosing; scatter cushions sized to the back height.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Buttoned upholstery is packed so that nothing presses into the buttons, because sustained pressure on a button in transit leaves a mark in the covering that takes time to recover.

The back is covered with a clean breathable wrap and then protected with a standoff board held clear of the buttoned face on foam blocks at the frame edges, so there is an air gap over the buttoning itself.

The openwork apron is packed with foam worked into its piercings, supported from within, and the carved scroll feet are wrapped and blocked so the sofa's weight rests on its rails.

Cushions travel wrapped separately to keep their shape. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Delivery anywhere in India is free and included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no surcharge for a smaller town.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, finishing, upholstery and crating.

The consignment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is our responsibility to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order and we plan the crate and route around them before the sofa leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the leg joints, the back frame that carries the buttoning, the arm structure and the crest and apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and given in writing.

Buttoned work can be re-tensioned and covers remade over the years without touching the frame, and because the button positions are recorded on the frame itself the pattern can be reproduced exactly if the sofa is ever recovered. We can do that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
