Sofa Set for Living Room in Carved Teak with a Fringed Seat and Plinth Base

The dark moulded base under the gold plinth is doing something specific: it puts a shadow where the eye expects one.

A large piece of furniture standing directly on the floor reads as heavy, because there is no visual break between the object and the ground. The traditional cure is a plinth - but a plinth in the same colour as the piece simply extends the mass downward.

So the base here is finished dark while the carved plinth above it is gilded. From a standing position the dark band reads as shadow rather than as timber, and the gilded carving above appears to hover clear of the floor. The sofa keeps all of its presence and loses the visual weight at its base.

The height of that dark band is calculated from the seat height and the likely viewing distance - too thin and the effect disappears, too deep and the sofa looks as though it is standing on a step. Our artisans set it out on the drawing and check it against a full-size elevation before any timber is cut.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans.

Structure: fluted and buttoned back frame with pierced carved crest; wing side panels angled inward; deep pierced gilded plinth over a dark moulded base; carved feet.

Seat: long cushion over a sprung and webbed platform, with optional bullion fringe along the front edge.

A bullion fringe tangles and crushes if it is packed loose, so it is dressed and then wrapped along its full length before anything else goes on - combed straight, laid flat and held with a soft sleeve.

The upholstered surfaces are covered with a clean breathable wrap, and the fluted back is given a standoff board on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons or flattens the channels.

The pierced plinth is packed with foam worked into its openings and the sofa is blocked so its weight rests on the plinth frame rather than on the carved face. The crest is capped separately.

Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

The solid teak frame and its joinery carry a 20-year Brown Rabbit warranty - the seat rails, the plinth frame and base, the wing panel joints, the back frame and the crest fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, backed by teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Fringe, cushions and covers are all serviceable parts that can be renewed over the years without disturbing the frame, and the fluting can be re-tensioned. We can carry out that work whenever it is wanted.
