Carved Teak Jhula on a Straight Beam Stand

This is a carved teak swing in a natural honey polish, hung from a tall straight top beam carried on turned and carved posts that stand on carved plinths. The beam is the traditional haveli hindola form, and its height is what sets the chain length and therefore the swing's arc: taller posts and longer chains give the long, slow, gentle movement a jhula is really made for.

The seat is largely open. Jaali lattice fills the back panel and both arms within carved framing rails, a shaped cartouche crest rises above the backrest, and a carved apron runs beneath the seat. Decorative link chains carry the seat from the beam, and a cushion is upholstered in your choice of fabric. Every Brown Rabbit jhula is made to order, so the stand height, the chain length, the seat width, the finish and the upholstery are agreed with you before production and confirmed in writing. The solid teak and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the piece, delivery anywhere in India is free, and our team assembles and balances it in your home.

Why a Straight Beam Gives a Better Swing

An arched rail is graceful and a straight beam is traditional, but the real difference between them is what they let you do with height. A straight beam carries its load in clean bending along its length, so it can span between posts that stand considerably taller. Taller posts mean longer chains, and chain length is what governs how a swing moves: a long chain gives a slow, wide, unhurried arc, while a short one gives a quick, tight movement that stops being restful after a few minutes.

That is why this jhula is built the way it is. The posts are turned and carved in stacked sections and rise well above seat height, the beam spans between them carrying a foliate crest and central rosette, and the chains that hang from it are long enough to give the seat a genuinely gentle swing. It is the same reason old haveli and temple hindolas were hung from high beams rather than low frames. Everything else follows: an open jaali back and arms so the piece stays light despite its height, and decorative link chains so the suspension is part of the design rather than hardware. All of it is carved and polished by hand by master Indian artisans.

Packing a Tall Stand and an Open Seat

The jhula ships as separate protected elements: the two posts with their plinths, the top beam, the seat, the chains and the cushion. Crating them apart means nothing carries the weight of anything else, and it lets a tall stand come through ordinary doorways, since assembled it is considerably taller than any single component.

The posts are the longest pieces and travel wrapped along their full length, with the turned sections, carved capitals and finials contour-padded so nothing presses on the relief. The beam is bedded along its whole span rather than supported at its ends, with the carved crest and rosette relieved in the foam. On the seat, the jaali back and arm panels are shielded by rigid boards standing clear of their faces so nothing presses into the lattice, and the carved cartouche crest is individually guarded. Decorative chains are boxed separately so their links cannot mark the polish, and the cushion travels uncompressed. Your jhula arrives dent-free with the carving crisp.

Free Delivery, Assembly and Balancing Across India

Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. Production begins once your specification is confirmed and we give you a realistic completion window at that point. If you are working towards a housewarming, a festival or a particular date, tell us at enquiry and we will plan the build around it.

Send us your ceiling height at enquiry along with the floor space available. Ceiling height is what governs how tall we can build the posts, and post height is what gives you the long slow arc, so it is the first measurement we ask for. On delivery our team assembles the stand, hangs the seat, sets the chain length and balances the swing so it hangs level and moves sweetly, adjusting it while you sit in it. Because the jhula is freestanding, you can reposition it at any time afterwards.

Warranty on This Jhula

The solid teak and its joinery are guaranteed for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the entire life of the piece with no expiry. On a straight-beam stand the beam carries the whole moving load in bending, so it is sized to the span and the seat width you order, and its joints into the post heads are cut and pinned into solid teak. Those joints, the post-to-plinth connections and the four hanging points on the seat frame are all covered for the full term. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through the oils within the timber.

Chains and fittings are supplied to suit the seat and the arc you want, covered against manufacturing fault, and we service or replace them at any point in the life of the jhula. Cushions are reupholstered whenever you would like something new. Because the piece is polished rather than painted, the finish can be cut back and rebuilt in place without stripping it, so the swing can be brought back to new at any time. We do all of it for our own pieces at an honest price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Height. A straight beam carries its load cleanly along its length, so the posts can stand taller than an arched rail allows, and taller posts mean longer chains. Longer chains give the slow wide arc that makes a jhula restful to sit in.

Yes, and it is set by the chain length. Tell us whether you prefer a long gentle arc or a shorter, more contained movement, and we build the stand height and chains to give you that. It can be adjusted again later at any time.

No. The stand carries everything on its own posts and plinths, so it is entirely freestanding. The same seat can also be supplied for ceiling suspension if you have a beam or slab you would prefer to hang it from.

So a tall jhula stays light. Lattice lets you see through the piece, which keeps it from blocking a room the way a solid back would at this height, and it lets air move freely, which is welcome on a verandah or beside a window.

Yes. Plain brass or steel chains, decorative link chains as shown, or rope are all available. Rope gives a softer, quieter movement, brass reads warmer against honey teak, and decorative links make the suspension part of the design.

Your ceiling height. It governs how tall the posts can be, and post height is what gives you the swing arc. Send that along with the floor space available and we will propose a stand height and chain length to suit.

Yes to both. Two seater, three seater or a custom width, with the beam and chains sized to match, and cushions in any fabric or leather you like. Ask for swatches at enquiry and we reupholster later whenever you wish.
