Dark Carved Teak Jhula with Jaali Screen Stand

This is a traditional jhula in solid teak, finished in a deep dark tone. Each upright of the stand is a tall panel filled edge to edge with jaali lattice, framed in carved teak, standing on a moulded plinth with a carved elephant at its foot, and the two screens are joined by a straight moulded top beam from which the seat hangs on brass bead chains.

The seat is deliberately open: a run of slender turned spindles forms the backrest beneath a carved crest rail, and the arms curve down through scrolled wheel-shaped supports onto carved elephants. A cushion is upholstered in your choice of fabric. Every Brown Rabbit jhula is made to order, so the screen height, the seat width, the chain length, the finish and the upholstery are agreed with you before production and confirmed in writing. The solid teak and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the piece, delivery anywhere in India is free, and our team assembles and balances it in your home.

A Swing That Is Also a Screen

Most jhula stands are two posts and a beam, and they do one job. Building the uprights as full jaali screens gives the piece a second one. Placed across an opening, at the end of a living area or between a sitting space and a passage, the two lattice panels mark a boundary and filter the view the way a jaali screen has always done in Indian architecture, while light and air pass straight through them. You get seating and a room divider in the same object, and neither compromises the other.

Everything else on the piece is drawn to keep it from feeling heavy. The seat back is a run of slender turned spindles rather than a solid or panelled board, so the eye passes through the seat as well as the stand. The arms curve down through open scrolled supports. The chains are brass beads rather than plain links, so they catch light against the dark timber and read as jewellery on the piece. The dark finish ties the whole composition together and makes the lattice read as a fine graphic pattern rather than as bulk. It is carved and finished by hand by master Indian artisans.

Protecting Screen Panels and Turned Spindles

The two jaali screens are the largest and finest components in this shipment. Each travels flat in its own crate, protected by rigid boards standing clear of both faces so nothing presses into the lattice, with the carved frame edges corner-guarded and the elephant at the foot individually wrapped. Shipping them apart also lets the stand come through ordinary doorways, since assembled it is much wider than either panel.

The seat travels separately with its run of turned spindles shielded by a rigid guard spanning the whole back, so no packing material bears on the individual turnings, and the scrolled arm supports and their carved elephants contour-padded. The moulded beam is bedded along its full length. Brass bead chains are boxed apart so they cannot mark the dark polish, which shows contact more readily than a pale finish, and every polished face is wrapped in a soft non-abrasive layer. Cushions travel uncompressed. Your jhula arrives dent-free with the lattice and spindles intact.

Free Delivery, Assembly and Balancing Across India

Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. Production begins once your specification is confirmed and we give you a realistic completion window at that point. If you are working towards a housewarming, a festival or a particular date, tell us at enquiry and we will plan the build around it.

Because the screens can act as a divider, it is worth telling us at enquiry where in the room you imagine the jhula standing and what you would like it to screen. We build the panel height and the overall width to suit that position. On delivery our team assembles the stand, hangs the seat on its brass chains, sets the height you find easiest and balances the swing so it hangs level and moves sweetly. It stays freestanding, so you can reposition it whenever you like.

Warranty on This Jhula

The solid teak and its joinery are guaranteed for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the entire life of the piece with no expiry. On a screen-post stand the carved frame around each jaali panel is the structural member, sized to carry the swinging load down to the plinth, with the lattice held within it. Those frames, their joints into the beam and the plinths, and the four hanging points on the seat are all cut and pinned into solid teak and covered for the full term. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through the oils within the timber.

Brass chains and their fittings are supplied to suit the seat, covered against manufacturing fault, and we service or replace them at any point. Cushions are reupholstered whenever you would like something new. Because the piece is polished rather than painted, the finish can be cut back and rebuilt in place without stripping it, so the jhula can be brought back to new at any time, and we do all of it for our own pieces at an honest price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, that is one of its best qualities. Each upright is a full jaali screen, so placed across an opening or at the end of a living area the two panels mark a boundary and filter the view while letting light and air straight through.

We build them to your room. Send us the ceiling height and the position you have in mind at enquiry, and we will propose a panel height that both screens the space the way you want and gives the seat a comfortable swing arc.

So the seat stays light. A run of slender spindles lets the eye pass through, which balances the solidity of the screen posts, and it keeps air moving around whoever is sitting in it. A solid or jaali back can be made instead if you prefer.

Both. They carry the seat and are sized for the load, and the beaded links catch light against the dark timber so the suspension reads as part of the design. Plain chains and rope are also available if you would like something quieter.

Just regular dusting with a dry soft brush on the carving and a barely damp cloth on flat surfaces. Because the piece is polished rather than painted, we can refresh the finish in place at any point to bring the depth of colour back.

No. The screens and plinths carry everything, so the jhula is entirely freestanding and can be set up in an apartment without any building work. A ceiling-hung version of the same seat is available if you prefer.

Yes. Two seater, three seater or a custom width, with the beam, screens and chains sized to match. Send us the space you have and how many you would like to seat and we will scale the whole piece around that.
