Carved Teak Jhula Beneath a Serpentine Valance

This is a carved teak jhula swing in a pale finish, hung beneath a wide carved valance whose lower edge runs in a serpentine double curve, dipping at the centre and lifting towards each column, with dense foliate carving across its face. The seat hangs within that framed space on beaded chains, so it feels sheltered without anything solid overhead.

The columns are fluted their full height with carved capitals and turned finials above, standing on carved plinths with pierced arched aprons at the base. The seat carries a shaped back panel rising to a pierced medallion crest, scrolled arms flowing down from it and a carved rail beneath the cushion. Every Brown Rabbit jhula is made to order, so the column height, the valance depth, the seat width, the chain length, the finish and the upholstery are agreed with you before production and confirmed in writing. The solid teak and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the piece, delivery anywhere in India is free, and our team assembles and balances it in your home.

A Valance Instead of a Beam

In haveli architecture the space above a doorway or a canopied seat is rarely left as a bare lintel. It is filled with a valance: a carved pelmet with a shaped lower edge, deep enough to read as ornament, that turns an opening into a framed one. This jhula borrows that directly. The top of the frame is a wide carved pelmet with a serpentine lower edge, dipping at the centre and rising towards each column, so the swing hangs within a defined space rather than beneath a plain rail.

The effect is a sense of shelter with nothing solid overhead. You sit under something without sitting under a roof, which keeps the piece light in a room while giving it the enclosure that makes a swing feel restful. The fluted columns carry the same architectural language down to the floor, with carved capitals where they meet the valance and pierced arched aprons at the plinths, so the whole frame reads as a small piece of building rather than as a stand. The seat within it is shaped and carved to match, rising to a pierced medallion at the crest. All of it is carved by hand by master Indian artisans.

Protecting a Carved Valance and Fluted Columns

The valance is the most heavily carved component on this jhula and the one that sets how it travels. It is crated on its own bed cut to the serpentine profile so the shaped lower edge is supported along its whole length rather than at its ends, with the foliate carving relieved in the foam so nothing presses on the relief.

The fluted columns are wrapped along their full length with half-round guards that follow the outer diameter without pressing into the flutes, and the carved capitals and turned finials are individually padded. The plinths travel on full-bearing beds cut to their footprint, with the pierced arched aprons shielded by rigid guards standing clear of the cut-through work. On the seat, the pierced medallion crest and the scrolled arms are contour-padded. Beaded chains are boxed separately so they cannot mark the pale polish, and the cushion travels uncompressed. Shipping in parts also lets a tall frame come through ordinary doorways. Your jhula arrives dent-free with the carving crisp.

Free Delivery, Assembly and Balancing Across India

Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. Production begins once your specification is confirmed and we give you a realistic completion window at that point. If you are working towards a housewarming, a festival or a particular date, tell us at enquiry and we will plan the build around it.

Send us your ceiling height at enquiry along with the floor space available. The valance takes depth above the seat, so ceiling height governs how tall the columns stand and how deep the pelmet can be, and we proportion the two together to suit your room. On delivery our team assembles the frame, hangs the seat on its beaded chains, sets the height you find easiest and balances the swing so it hangs level and moves sweetly, adjusting it while you try it.

Warranty on This Jhula

The solid teak and its joinery are guaranteed for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the entire life of the piece with no expiry. The valance spans between the two columns and carries the swinging load, so its structural depth is sized to the span and the seat width you order, with the carved serpentine edge worked from the same member rather than applied to it. Those joints into the column capitals, the column-to-plinth connections and the four hanging points on the seat are all covered for the full term. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through the oils within the timber.

Chains and fittings are supplied to suit the seat, covered against manufacturing fault, and we service or replace them at any point in the life of the jhula. Cushions are reupholstered whenever you would like something new. Because the piece is polished rather than painted, the finish can be cut back and rebuilt in place without stripping it, so a pale tone stays bright and the jhula can be brought back to new at any time. We do all of it for our own pieces at an honest price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

A wide carved pelmet with a serpentine lower edge, borrowed from the valances above doorways and canopied seats in haveli architecture. It turns the space the swing hangs in into a framed one, so the seat feels sheltered without anything solid overhead.

Both. It is the beam spanning between the columns and carrying the swinging load, with the shaped edge and foliate carving worked from the same member rather than applied to it. It is sized to the span and covered by the 20-year frame warranty.

Enough for the columns and the depth of the valance above the seat, and we proportion the two to whatever height you have. Send us your ceiling height at enquiry and we will propose column and pelmet dimensions to suit the room.

No. The columns and plinths carry everything, so the jhula is entirely freestanding. The same seat can also be supplied for ceiling suspension if you have a beam you would prefer to hang it from.

Either. A deeper pelmet gives more shelter and more presence; a shallower or more simply carved one keeps the piece lighter. Tell us which you prefer and we will draw it that way.

Yes to both, as well as the beaded chains shown. Brass reads warm against pale teak, rope gives a softer and quieter movement, and beaded links make the suspension part of the design.

Yes. Two seater, three seater or a custom width, with the valance and columns sized to match, and cushions in any fabric or leather you like. Ask for swatches at enquiry and we reupholster later whenever you wish.
