Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror finished in gold, built as a slim pierced scrollwork frame around a plain rectangular plate, with a tall carved plume rising at the crest. The design language is restrained Rococo: C-scrolls turning back on themselves, acanthus curling between them, the ground cut right through so the wall shows in every opening, and a foliate apron closing the base. There is no figure work, no medallion and no marginal glass - the frame is one idea, carried cleanly all the way round.

It is made for walls where a heavy surround would be too much: a bedroom above a dresser, a hallway between doors, a study, a guest room, a narrow stretch of wall in a hospitality interior. Because the frame is openwork and slender, the wall colour behind becomes part of the piece, and it hangs comfortably against both plain paint and patterned wallpaper. Scroll density, crest height and gold tone are all specified by you, and no two frames come off the bench identical.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Thin is harder than thick. A wide frame can carry a bad decision - there is enough timber left over to absorb it. A slender pierced frame cannot: every rib is close to its minimum section, so the carver has to read the grain along the whole run before a single cut is made, and leave strength exactly where the glass will hang from.

The work starts with board selection - straight, tight-grained seasoned teak, chosen for the direction of the grain along each stile rather than for surface colour. The scroll rhythm is drawn out full-scale so the C-curves flow continuously and do not stutter where the rails meet at the corners. Then the carving: acanthus lifted in layers off the ground, undercut so light passes behind the leaves, and the waste between them pierced right through. The plume crest is cut last and is the tallest, most exposed element on the piece, shaped from the solid so it stands clear of everything below. Hand-sanding through progressive grits follows, then gold laid in coats and rubbed back by hand at every scroll tip, and the plate fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

This is the most slender frame in the mirror range, which makes it the one that needs the most careful packing. The plume crest projects further than anything else and is wrapped first, individually, in high-density foam and taped clear of the gilding so no adhesive touches gold. Every scroll tip along the four sides is then wrapped the same way. The pierced sections are faced with foam sheet on both sides and blocked, so nothing can press into an opening and break a rib.

The frame is sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so it cannot flex or shift on a long road journey - a slender frame flexes where a heavy one does not, so the crate is cross-braced. The plate is separately filmed and rigid-board backed. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and we photograph the piece wrapped and the crate closed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and check the plume and scroll tips before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, moving to the longer end if you enlarge the frame, raise the crest or ask for denser scrollwork, since piercing is the slowest work at the bench. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the scrollwork is cut and again after gilding, so you see the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so the route can be planned. We advise on hanging hardware suited to your wall type - on a light openwork frame the fixing matters more than the weight, because the load concentrates at two points. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens or a pierced rib fails because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, an unsuitable wall fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace the piece. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

A slim openwork frame needs a brush rather than a cloth. Work a clean dry soft brush through the scroll openings and around the plume crest; a cloth catches on the rib ends, and on a frame this slender the ribs are the thinnest in our range. Use a soft dry cloth only on the inner moulding around the plate. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface, as gold rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the mirror so nothing runs into the carving behind it. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow, mount it on a solid wall with anchors rated above its weight, and check the fixings once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame is genuine solid teak throughout, hand-selected and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Yes. Tell us at the order stage and the frame is carved for that orientation, with the plume crest composed for the long rail rather than simply turned on its side.

Hand-carved. Every scroll is pierced through solid teak by hand by master Indian artisans, with the ribs deliberately run along the grain - which is the only reason a frame this slender holds.

Yes. Frame size, scroll density, crest height and polish tone are all made to order. Send us your wall dimensions and what proportion you want and we will quote.

This is one of the more accessible pieces in our mirror range because the frame is slim, though the piercing is still hand work. Price scales with size and scroll density - enquire for an exact quote.

The plume crest and every scroll tip are individually foam-wrapped, the pierced sections are faced and blocked on both sides, and the frame ships corner-guarded in a cross-braced crate. Shipping is free anywhere in India.
