Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror finished in gold, built as a wide, deep-section border around a near-square rectangular plate. The design language is Baroque revival worked in relief rather than openwork: dense foliate cartouches filling all four corners, carved motifs centred on each rail, a running foliate ground between them, and beaded mouldings defining both the inner edge at the glass and the outer edge at the wall. Nothing is pierced - the ornament is cut into a solid ground, which is what gives the frame its weight and its deep shadow line.

It is made for walls that need filling with something substantial: a living room above a sofa or console, a dining wall, a study, an entrance hall, or a hospitality interior where the mirror has to hold a large plain surface. Because the design has no crest, it hangs portrait or landscape without looking wrong, and the near-square plate suits both. Border width, carving density and gold tone are all specified by you, and every corner cartouche is cut individually rather than repeated from a mould.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Relief carving into a solid ground is the oldest discipline in the workshop and, in some ways, the least forgiving. In openwork you remove waste and the eye reads the silhouette; in relief the eye reads depth, and depth has to be consistent across a wide border or the frame looks uneven under raking light. The carver therefore works to a fixed ground level across all four rails, checking constantly, because a passage cut a fraction too deep cannot be raised again.

The corner cartouches are set out first, since they carry the most ornament and everything else is composed to balance them. Each is cut individually - the scrolls turning outward, the foliage layered so leaves overlap - and no two corners are identical when examined closely, though they read as a matched set. The centre motifs on each rail are cut next, then the running foliate ground between them.

The beaded mouldings are run last along both edges, and they are the fussiest work on the piece: two continuous bead runs of different scale that both have to keep rhythm around all four corners. Then hand-sanding, gold in coats, and rubbing back at every bead and leaf tip.

Packaging and Transit Protection

Because nothing on this frame is pierced, the breakage risk is lower than on our openwork mirrors - but the weight is considerably higher, and weight is its own hazard. A heavy frame that shifts inside a crate will damage itself, so the blocking here is built to hold mass rather than to cushion delicate tips. The corner cartouches, which project furthest and take any impact first, are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the gilding.

The whole frame is then faced with a soft interleaf, sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and set into a fitted wooden crate with dense foam blocking on every face so it cannot move at all. The plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board. The crate is built to the weight, skidded where required for handling, and marked for orientation, fragility and lifting points. We photograph the piece wrapped and the crate sealed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and check the corner cartouches and the bead runs before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, moving to the longer end for a larger frame or a wider border, since the running foliate ground and the two bead runs both scale directly with perimeter. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the carving is closed and again after gilding, so you approve the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange transport sized to the crate and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions - this is a heavy piece and the route matters more than it does for a light openwork frame. We advise on structural fixing for your wall type and recommend professional installation for the larger sizes. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, an unsuitable wall fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace the piece. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

A relief-carved frame is easier to keep clean than an openwork one, but the deep recesses in the corner cartouches will hold dust. Use a clean dry soft brush there and in the running foliate ground, and a soft dry cloth along the two beaded mouldings and the plain passages. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - gold rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the plate so nothing runs into the inner beading. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow. This is a heavy frame: mount it on a solid or structural wall with anchors rated well above its weight, and check the fixings once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame is genuine solid teak throughout, hand-selected, matched and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Yes. There is no crest, so the design has no fixed top and the near-square plate suits either orientation. Tell us your preference at the order stage so the hanging hardware is fitted for it.

Cut in relief into a solid ground, not pierced. That is what gives this frame its weight, its depth of section and its shadow line - it is the heavier, more substantial alternative to our openwork mirrors.

Yes. Border width, overall size, carving density and polish tone are all made to order. A wider border adds significantly to the bench hours, since the foliate ground and both bead runs scale with the perimeter.

It is one of the heavier frames in the range. Mount it on a solid or structural wall with anchors rated well above its weight; we advise on the right fixing for your wall type and recommend professional installation in the larger sizes.

Typically 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, and shipping is free anywhere in India. The frame ships interleaved, foam-blocked and corner-guarded in a crate built to its weight.
