Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror finished in gold, built as a beaded oval plate held within a pierced square frame. The design language is late eighteenth-century French: dense rose and leaf garlands trailing down both sides and across the corners, a carved shell with an oak and acorn spray crowning the top rail, a matching shell cartouche at the base, and a bold rectilinear outer profile that steps forward at each corner to square off the composition. The ground behind the garlands is cut right through, so the wall colour shows and the flowers read as suspended.

It is made for rooms where the mirror is meant to be a decorative object as much as a functional one - a drawing room, a principal bedroom, a dressing area, a landing, or a formal guest room. The square outline sits comfortably beside pictures and panelling while the oval plate keeps the reflection soft. Because every bloom is carved individually, the garland density can be increased for more opulence or eased for a lighter effect, and the gold taken warmer, antiqued, into silver or into a dark wood polish.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Carving flowers that look like flowers is harder than carving acanthus that looks like acanthus, because everyone knows what a rose looks like. A stylised leaf can be judged only against other carvings; a rose is judged against the real thing, and a bad one is obvious to anyone. So the carver works from observation rather than from a pattern, cutting each bloom at a different stage - some fully open with the outer petals turning back, some half open, a few still tight in bud.

The garlands are built up over a pierced ground. First the ground is opened so the wall will show through; then the stems are laid across it and carved so they genuinely pass behind the leaves rather than stopping at them; then the blooms are cut and undercut so they stand proud of everything else. That layering is the reason the garland appears to hang in front of the frame.

The shell and oak spray at the crest is cut last, as is the base cartouche. Then hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold laid in coats and rubbed back at every petal edge and shell ridge, and the beaded oval plate fitted at the end.

Packaging and Transit Protection

Undercut rose heads standing proud over a pierced ground are the most fragile thing we make, and they are packed accordingly. Every bloom is wrapped individually in high-density foam and taped clear of the gilding so no adhesive touches gold, and the shell crest and base cartouche are treated the same way. The pierced ground is then faced with foam sheet on both sides and blocked, so nothing can press into an opening and break a rib beneath the flowers.

The oval plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board cut to the full square of the frame, so the glass is supported to the edge rather than only across the aperture. The frame is sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners - the stepped corner profiles chip easily - and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and photographed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and check the garlands closely before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, and this design sits at the longer end of that window as standard, because individually carved blooms over a pierced ground are the slowest work in the workshop. Increasing the garland density or the overall size extends it further. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the garlands are carved and again after gilding, so you approve the actual frame before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so the route can be planned. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type. International orders are quoted case by case - send us the destination for a freight and documentation quote.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens, a pierced rib fails or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, an unsuitable wall fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace the piece. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

This frame carries more delicate carving than almost anything else in the range, so cleaning discipline matters. Use only a clean dry soft brush on the garlands, working gently and from above so you are not levering against the undercut petals; a cloth will catch a petal edge and snap it, and an individually carved bloom cannot be replaced invisibly. A soft dry cloth is fine on the beaded oval surround and the stepped outer profile. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than at the plate so nothing runs behind the oval. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow, and mount it on a solid wall with anchors rated above its weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. The frame is genuine solid teak throughout, hand-selected and seasoned before carving. It is not veneer, MDF or engineered wood, and we confirm the wood in writing with your order.

Hand-carved individually, each at a different stage - some fully open, some half open, some still in bud - and undercut so they stand proud of a pierced ground. A moulded garland gives itself away because every flower faces forward.

That one has a lighter, more geometric frame with the flowers as trim. This design is far denser: the garlands are the main event, layered over a pierced ground with stems passing behind leaves, and it takes considerably more bench time.

Yes. Garland density is a choice - it can be increased for a more opulent frame or eased for a lighter one, and that directly affects both the look and the price. Tell us the effect you want when you enquire.

Use only a clean dry soft brush, working gently from above rather than against the undercut petals. Never use a cloth on the garlands, and never any liquid cleaner - an individually carved bloom cannot be replaced invisibly.

This design sits at the longer end of our 4 to 6 week window because the floral carving is the slowest work in the workshop. Shipping is free anywhere in India, with every bloom individually foam-wrapped.
