Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood pier mirror finished in gold, combining pierced Rococo scrollwork, amber-toned recessed inlay panels and a hand-painted cherub panel across the crest. Its proportion is architectural: a tall rectangular plate carried in a frame that rises well above head height and finishes on a carved scrolled apron with splayed feet. The ornament is asymmetric Rococo - C-scrolls, curling acanthus and shell forms - but it is disciplined by the straight panelled ground behind it, so the piece has structure as well as movement.

A pier mirror is traditionally hung or stood between two windows, and that is still where this one works hardest: it doubles the daylight in a room. It also suits a long hallway, a stair landing, a dressing room, or a hotel or villa lobby that needs vertical drama. Because the crest panel is painted by hand and the carving cut by hand, each piece is unique, and the panel subject, panel colour and gold tone can all be specified. Handcrafted Indian luxury at architectural scale.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Three sets of hands make this piece. The first belongs to the carver, who starts with teak seasoned for months so the timber has stopped moving before a chisel touches it. He cuts the scroll runs down each stile in a continuous rhythm, then opens the crest into pierced work so light passes behind the leaves rather than stopping at a flat board.

The second belongs to the panel maker, who fits the recessed grounds and brings them to the amber tone that sits behind the gilding. That contrast is the reason the carving reads from across a room instead of dissolving into a single-colour surface. The third belongs to the painter. The cherub scene at the crest is laid in by hand, colour over colour, and it is the one part of the mirror that can never be repeated exactly - which is precisely the point.

Only then does the piece come together: hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold built up in coats and rubbed back at the raised edges so wear falls where a hand or a century would put it, and the tall plate fitted last. Weeks of work, meant to be inherited rather than replaced.

Packaging and Transit Protection

Height is the risk on a pier mirror, and the painted crest is the part that cannot be repaired in transit. So the crest is protected first: faced with a soft interleaf so nothing abrades the paint, then wrapped in high-density foam and taped clear of the painted surface. Every projecting scroll and the apron carving are individually foam-wrapped. The tall plate is covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board along its full length.

The frame is then sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners and blocked into a purpose-built wooden crate with foam on every face. Because the piece is long, the crate is built heavier than our standard, cross-braced against flex and marked for orientation, fragility and lifting points so it travels upright. We photograph the mirror wrapped and the crate sealed and share those images before dispatch. On arrival, open the crate against the packing list and inspect the painted panel and the glass before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

This mirror is made to order and the painted crest adds a stage that cannot be rushed. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, extending if you increase the height, change the panel colour or specify a different painted subject. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order, and we share photographs after carving, after the panel is painted and again after gilding, so you approve the piece before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange transport sized to the crate and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address. Because the piece is tall, please confirm your doorway and stair widths, lift internal height and any service-entry restriction before dispatch so we can plan the route. We advise on wall-securing hardware even for floor-standing placement, which we strongly recommend at this height. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the carving and the joinery. If a joint opens or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, unsuitable fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance. The hand-painted crest panel is hand-finished art; minor variation between pieces is expected and is not a defect.

Dust the pierced scrollwork with a clean dry soft brush and use a soft dry cloth on the flat panels and mouldings. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia cleaners on the gilded carving or on the painted panel - the paint will lift and cannot be spot-repaired invisibly. Spray glass cleaner onto a cloth, never onto the mirror, so nothing runs down behind the frame. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight, which fades painted work faster than it fades gold. Because of the height, secure the frame to the wall even if it stands on the floor, and check the fixings once a year.
