Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood wall mirror finished in gold, built as a wide continuous acanthus leaf border around a rectangular plate, with a fluted inner moulding separating the carving from the glass. The design language is Baroque but stripped of narrative: no crest, no cartouche, no shell, no medallion - just a single bold leaf motif repeated and turned around all four sides, cut deep enough that the leaf tips lift clear of the ground and cast their own shadow.

Because there is no crest, the piece has no fixed top, which makes it unusually flexible: it hangs portrait or landscape equally well and can be moved between rooms without looking out of place. That suits a bedroom above a dresser, a hallway, a study, a bathroom wall or a guest room, and it works particularly well in interiors that already have a lot going on, where a crested mirror would add one more competing element. Border width, leaf depth and gold tone are all specified by you.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Repeating a motif looks like the easy option and is in fact the hardest. Every leaf is compared against every other leaf by the eye automatically, so a single one cut shallow or spaced a fraction wide is obvious - there is no crest or cartouche to distract from it. The carver has nowhere to hide, which is why this frame is a workshop test piece as much as a product.

It begins with setting out. The leaf spacing is calculated for the exact frame size so the run divides evenly along each rail and, critically, turns the corners without a half leaf or a stretched one. Get that wrong and the corner announces itself forever. Only then does carving begin: each leaf shaped from the solid, the central vein cut, the edges undercut so the tip lifts away from the ground. The fluted inner moulding is run last, its reeds kept parallel along the full perimeter. Then hand-sanding through progressive grits, gold laid in coats and rubbed back by hand along every leaf tip and flute ridge so the light breaks unevenly across the border the way it does on old giltwood.

Factual specification for this hand-carved teak wood acanthus leaf wall mirror:

  • Material: Solid teak wood, hand-carved (no veneer, no engineered wood)
  • Style: Baroque continuous acanthus leaf border, no crest
  • Finish: Gold, hand-applied and hand-rubbed at the leaf tips; customisable to antique gold, distressed gold, silver or dark wood polish
  • Frame detail: Bold acanthus leaves carved continuously around all four sides with undercut tips, leaf spacing set out to turn the corners without a broken repeat, fluted inner moulding to the glass
  • Glass: Rectangular mirror plate
  • Orientation: Wall-mounted; hangs portrait or landscape, no fixed top
  • Size: Custom sizes made to order - share your wall dimensions and we will quote
  • Make: Made to order, handcrafted by master Indian artisans

Packaging and Transit Protection

Every undercut leaf tip on this border projects, and there are a great many of them - which means the risk here is not one dramatic break but a dozen small chips picked up from rubbing. So the whole border is faced with a soft interleaf before any foam touches it, and the leaf runs are then wrapped in high-density foam along their full length rather than tip by tip, so nothing can catch and lever a tip off.

The frame is sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners - the corner leaves are the most exposed on the piece - and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so it cannot slide and abrade. The plate is separately covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board. The crate is marked for orientation and fragility, strapped and sealed, and we photograph the mirror wrapped and the crate closed before dispatch. On arrival, open against the packing list and run your eye along the full border, particularly the corners, before signing.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is carved after you order, and the leaf spacing is calculated for your specific frame size, so this is genuinely made to measure rather than resized from a standard. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from confirmation, moving to the longer end for a larger frame or a wider, deeper border. The exact timeline is confirmed in writing at order and we share progress photographs once the border is carved and again after gilding.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We arrange and manage transport and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than leaving a crate at the gate. Please tell us in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry restrictions so the route can be planned. We advise on hanging hardware for your wall type, and if you plan to hang the mirror landscape rather than portrait, say so at the order stage so the fittings are set for it. International orders are quoted case by case on request.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame and the hand-carving. If a joint opens or a carved leaf separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, an unsuitable wall fixing or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace the piece. Glass breakage after delivery and water damage sit outside the assurance.

The undercut leaf tips are where a cloth catches, so use a clean dry soft brush along the border, working in the direction the leaves lie rather than against them. The fluted inner moulding cleans well with a soft dry cloth run along the reeds. Never use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners on the gilded surface - gold rubbed back by hand cannot be spot-repaired invisibly once stripped, and on a repeated motif any patch shows against its neighbours immediately. Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the plate so nothing runs into the moulding. Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight and away from heat and air-conditioner outflow. Mount on a solid wall with anchors rated well above its weight, and if you rehang it in the other orientation, refit the hardware rather than reusing the old holes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes. Every rail is genuine solid teak, hand-selected and colour-matched before carving so the repeated leaves look consistent all the way round. No veneer, MDF or engineered wood.

Yes. There is no crest, so the design has no fixed top and hangs either way. Tell us your preferred orientation at the order stage so the hanging hardware is fitted for it.

Hand-carved. Each leaf is shaped individually from the solid with its tip undercut so it lifts clear of the ground - which is why the border casts shadow rather than looking like applied moulding.

Because the leaf spacing is calculated for your specific frame size before any carving starts, so the run divides evenly along each rail and turns the corners without a half or stretched leaf.

This is one of the more accessible pieces in our mirror range. Price scales with frame size and border width - send your dimensions and we will quote exactly.

Typically 4 to 6 weeks from order confirmation, and shipping is free anywhere in India. The border is interleaved and foam-wrapped along its full length and the frame ships corner-guarded in a fitted crate.
