A linen sofa on a silvered carved teak frame, with a buttoned back, scrolled arms and cabriole legs, made to order by Brown Rabbit.

Plain upholstery is the most flexible starting point there is. With a neutral linen on the sofa itself, the character of the room comes from the cushions, and it can be moved from blue to green to rose over the years without anything else needing to change.

Silver rather than gold on the frame supports that. It sits comfortably with cool colours and warm ones alike, which gold does not do quite so easily, so the sofa keeps its options open.

Fabric, cushion selection, dimensions and finish are all yours to set, and matching chairs can be made as a suite. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production.

Plain linen is the hardest fabric to upholster well, precisely because there is no pattern to hide behind.

On a patterned cloth, a seam that wanders by a millimetre disappears into the design. On plain linen it is a visible line running across an otherwise empty field, and the eye follows it the length of the sofa. The same applies to the weave itself - linen has a clear warp and weft, and if a panel is cut even slightly off-square the grain of the cloth runs at an angle to the frame and the whole panel looks skewed.

So our upholsterers cut plain cloth to the thread rather than to a chalk line: the fabric is pulled to find the true line of the weave and cut along it, so the warp runs vertically and the weft horizontally on every panel of the finished piece.

Seams are then placed where the frame gives them a reason to be - at a change of plane, along the edge of the apron, at the junction of arm and back - rather than wherever the width of the roll happens to run out. On a plain cloth, a seam that has a reason looks intentional and one that does not looks like an accident.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved by master Indian artisans and silvered.

Structure: shaped back frame with buttoned panel curving forward into scrolled arms; carved and shaped apron to front and sides; cabriole legs with carved knees.

Seat: two loose cushions over a sprung and webbed platform.

Upholstery: fabric of your choosing; plain cloth cut to the thread so warp and weft run true on every panel, with seams placed at changes of plane.

Finish: silvered frame as photographed; gold, ivory, champagne, black with gold and natural teak available.

Sizes: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are photographs of the actual product, not renders.

Pale plain cloth is packed with cleanliness as the first priority, because a mark on plain linen has nothing to hide behind.

The upholstered surfaces are covered with a clean breathable wrap that will not transfer colour or leave an impression, applied before any foam or tape comes near the piece.

The buttoned back is given a standoff board held clear on foam blocks so nothing presses into the buttons, and the cushions travel wrapped separately to keep their shape.

The silvered carving on the crest, arms and apron is capped with shaped foam, and the cabriole legs are wrapped and blocked so the sofa's weight rests on its rails. Everything then goes into laminated foam, bubble wrap and a fitted wooden crate. Multi-layer protective packaging is standard and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Free delivery anywhere in India is included in the price - no separate freight charge, no distance loading, no small-town surcharge.

Production begins once your dimensions, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. You get a realistic production window at that point and updates as the piece moves through frame work, carving, silvering, upholstery and crating.

The shipment is tracked and our team stays reachable throughout. Dent-free arrival is guaranteed and it is ours to honour.

Tell us your doorway, stair and lift dimensions when you order and we plan the crate and route around them before the sofa leaves the workshop.

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak frame and its joinery for 20 years - the seat rails, the cabriole leg joints, the back frame carrying the buttoning, the arm structure and the apron fixings.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with the sofa for as long as you own it, resting on teak's natural termite resistance and confirmed in writing.

Because the upholstery is plain, recovering it later is unusually simple - the frame is not tied to a particular pattern, and the seam positions are recorded so a new cover reproduces the original layout. We can do that work whenever it is wanted.

Written warranty terms are issued with your order so the cover is agreed before production begins.
