Wooden Bed with Cushion Headboard in Teak - Honey Finish with Gold

Most headboards are designed to be seen and not used, which is why so many people end up piling pillows against them to sit up in bed. A cushion headboard is the fix, and getting it right is a matter of three measurements rather than of style: the height of the finished mattress off the floor, the depth of the padding, and where the top of the upholstered panel falls.

Get those right and you can sit up against the bed and read comfortably without a single extra pillow. Get them wrong - and beds sold off a shelf usually do, because they cannot know your mattress - and the padding sits behind your lower back where it does nothing.

This is one of the practical advantages of a made-to-order bed, and our master Indian artisans build it in as a matter of course. We ask what mattress you are using and how you sit in bed before the frame is cut, and the upholstery is specified from those answers rather than from a standard drawing.

Material: Solid teak throughout, including headboard frame, footboard, rails and the bedside chests.

Headboard: Deeply cushioned panel buttoned in a fine diamond grid, wide arched shape, carved frame with gold-tipped edges, foliate crest with a small centre cartouche.

Footboard: Two figured teak panels with symmetrical grain in a moulded gold-lined border, carved centre crest above, carved apron with a shell below, heavy carved scrolls onto the feet.

Upholstery: Shown in cream, and made in any fabric and colour you choose; padding depth set to your mattress height and how you sit in bed.

Finish: Honey teak with gold-tipped carving as shown, and available in mid brown, walnut, espresso or ivory, with gilding full, fine or omitted.

Bedside chests: Two drawers each, gold-tipped carved corners, moulded tops, cabriole legs. Included as shown, available in any quantity.

Sizes: Custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Deep cushioning must not be compressed in transit, or it takes a set and never fully recovers, so the headboard is packed with rigid support standing clear of the padded face - nothing rests on the cushion at any point - and bagged in a breathable cover.

The foliate crest above the headboard is given a shaped foam shell, and the gold-tipped edges are covered in a soft non-abrasive layer since fine gilding sits on the highest points and scuffs first.

The figured footboard panels are polished wood and are protected across their faces by a non-marking layer laid on without tension, with the moulded border edge-guarded.

The carved apron below is supported from beneath, and the corner scrolls and cabriole legs are collared individually. Rails are bundled, fittings pouched, chests packed with drawers secured. Everything is crated together with handling instructions. Every photograph here shows the actual bed before packing - not a render.

Production begins once your size, mattress details, fabric and finish are confirmed in writing. We give you a realistic timeline then and send photographs of your own bed as the footboard panels are selected, the carving cut and the cushion built.

On arrival the bed is carried in and assembled in your bedroom: headboard and footboard joined to the rails, everything levelled to your floor, and the finished headboard height checked against your mattress once it is in place. We guarantee dent-free arrival, and if anything is not right when you see it, tell us and we will make it right.

The solid teak frame and joinery are covered for 20 years - the headboard frame, the footboard and its panels, the side rails, the carved feet and every joint between them.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with it for as long as the bed is yours, backed by teak's own resistance and confirmed in writing.

Cushioning is the element that eventually softens with use, and it can be renewed: we replace the padding to the original depth and re-cover to the same buttoning grid, working from the specification of your exact bed which we keep on file. If your mattress changes and the proportions no longer suit, we can adjust the padding depth at the same time. The figured footboard panels can be sanded back and re-polished, and fittings replaced with parts made for your piece. Our own master Indian artisans do the work and explain it beforehand.
