Silver Behaves Differently From Gold

Silver is not simply gold in another colour. It is a cooler metal, it reflects a harder and whiter light, and on carved furniture it does two things gilding does not. It reads as a highlight rather than as a surface, so laying it into relief and leaving the flat ground white gives a drawn, almost etched quality to the ornament instead of the solid mass a gold finish produces. And it needs sealing. Bare silver leaf will tarnish in humid air, so every silvered surface on this bed is sealed after application, which is a step some makers skip and which shows within a couple of Indian monsoons when it has been skipped.

Leaving the footboard as bare carved wood was the other decision worth explaining. Upholstering both ends is the default because it looks more expensive in a photograph. In use, it means two fabric panels to keep clean, one of which sits exactly where people perch to put on shoes and where a pet will jump up. A carved and moulded solid teak footboard is wipeable, takes the knocks, and gives the eye something structural to land on at the foot of the bed after the softness of the buttoned headboard. Shipping Pierced Scrolls and a Silvered Finish

The two pierced scrolls flanking the headboard are the fragile components on this bed. Cut through the timber, they hold together on narrow bridges of teak that are entirely sound in position but will not take a strap or a knock on an edge. Each one is faced with a soft non-abrasive layer that will not abrade the silvered relief, then bedded into foam cut around the openings so the padding supports the solid frame behind and the pierced work bears nothing at all. Rigid guards go over the outermost points of each scroll and over the crown of the shell crest.

The silvered surfaces are handled with the same care as gilding: nothing abrasive touches them, because silver leaf laid into carved relief cannot be touched up invisibly once scuffed. The solid footboard, being a large flat panel, is corner-guarded and face-protected against scratching. The buttoned headboard panel travels with no strapping across the tufting. Termite cover has no end date because teak's resistance is a property of the wood rather than a coating that wears off, and because every board is seasoned and treated before it reaches a carver.

The white finish, the silver leaf, the upholstery and the foam sit outside the structural cover. Silver leaf is sealed against tarnish at the point of manufacture, and that sealing is our responsibility for the normal life of the finish; what is not covered is wear at points that are touched daily, or damage from solvent cleaners applied to the metallic surface.
