A traditional rocking chair in solid teak with cartwheel sides and a lattice back. It is the version most people picture when they think of an Indian rocking chair - all timber, no upholstery, built to be sat in every evening for decades.

Master Indian artisans turn the hubs, spokes and finials by hand and cut the lattice, the fan crest and the carved beading from solid stock. Because the wheels are structural rather than decorative, the chair reads as light and open from the side while still being a solid piece of furniture.

It is made to order. Choose the depth of the polish, the diameter of the wheels, the spacing of the lattice and the dimensions of the whole chair, and add a cushion if you want one. Custom sizes are made to order and final measurements are confirmed in writing before production. It comes with a 20-year warranty on the teak frame and joinery, a lifetime warranty against termite damage, free PAN-India delivery with guaranteed dent-free arrival, and multi-layer protective packaging.

The lattice on the back of this chair is not glued into place. It is deliberately left free to move, and that is what keeps it flat for fifty years.

The panel is made of two sets of thin slats, each notched halfway through where it crosses another so the two sets sit into each other and finish level - a cross-halving, cut by hand at every intersection. That gives a flat woven grid out of straight pieces. The grid then sits inside a groove ploughed around the inside of the back frame.

Here is the part that matters. Wood expands and contracts across its width with the seasons, and a panel this wide can move by several millimetres between a dry March and a wet July. If the panel were fixed in its groove, that movement would have nowhere to go: in the wet season it would push the frame apart at the joints, and in the dry season it would split itself trying to shrink. So the groove is cut deeper than the panel needs, and the panel floats in it - held captive on all four sides, fixed on none.

The chair breathes with the weather and nothing about it changes. It is the oldest solution in the trade, and nobody has found a better one.

Frame: solid teak throughout, hand-carved and hand-turned by master Indian artisans, with traditional joinery at every junction.

Sides: cartwheel panels with turned hubs, turned spokes and banded rims, structural between the arms and the rockers.

Back: interlaced lattice panel of cross-halved slats, floating in a grooved frame, under a carved fan crest with turned finials.

Arms: shaped arms sweeping from the back stiles over the wheels.

Seat: shaped solid board with a carved front rail.

Rockers: matched shaped bows cut from a single template, with a carved bead running the length.

Finish: warm hand polish showing the grain. Lighter or darker tones can be matched.

Cushion: none as photographed. A fitted seat or back cushion in any fabric can be added.

Size: custom sizes made to order - final measurements confirmed in writing before production.

Photography: images on this page are of the actual product, not renders.

The spokes are the thing to protect on this chair. They are slender turned members radiating from a hub, and a knock at the rim transfers straight into them - so the wheels are packed as assemblies rather than left exposed.

Foam is fitted around each rim and across the face of each wheel so the spokes are supported and no impact can reach them side-on. The finials, the carved crest, the arm ends and the beaded rocker edges each get their own collar. A soft non-abrasive layer covers the polished timber first so nothing coarse touches the finish, and shaped foam blocks cradle the rocker bows so the chair sits still with its weight spread.

Corrugated panels then build a rigid shell around everything, and the outer carton is edge-reinforced so stacked weight in transit is carried by the packaging rather than the frame. It all comes apart by hand, layer by layer, with no blades needed near the timber.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. No zone rates, no distance charges, no freight line at checkout - the chair costs the same delivered to Vijayawada as to Varanasi.

Dent-free arrival is guaranteed. It leaves in multi-layer protective packaging, travels with handlers briefed on turned and carved furniture, and is checked at each transfer point. If anything is not right when you open it, tell us and we make it right - the guarantee sits with us, not with the transporter.

Because every chair is made to order, production begins once your finish, wheel size and measurements are confirmed in writing. You get a timeline then, updates as the chair moves through turning, carving, assembly and polishing, and a dispatch note with an expected delivery window so you can plan the day it arrives.

The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty. On this chair that covers the wheels as structural members, the rockers and the joints where the wheels meet them, the seat, the arms and the back frame. If a joint works loose or a member fails within those twenty years, we repair or replace it.

A lifetime warranty against termite damage runs with it and never expires. Teak's own oils are the reason termites leave it alone, and our seasoning and finishing routine is built to keep those oils working, so we stand behind the timber for as long as the chair is yours.

Terms this long are only sensible if the maker knows every part of what they made, and we do - this chair is built start to finish in our own workshop by the master Indian artisans who make every piece we sell, from timber we season ourselves. The warranty registers automatically with your order. There is nothing to keep and nothing to send back; your order number is enough.
