The Story Behind This Sofa

With less carving to look at, the timber becomes the subject - so it is worth setting out what actually goes into selecting it.

Teak is bought as sawn stock and then graded in our own workshop rather than accepted as delivered. Boards are sorted for grain straightness, absence of knots in load-bearing positions, and colour consistency, because a sofa frame with show wood needs matched timber across visible members. A significant proportion of every consignment is rejected for frame use and goes to non-structural work.

Then it is seasoned. Teak arrives with moisture still in it, and timber that is still drying will move after the sofa is built - opening joints, cracking finish, distorting curves. Months of controlled drying is the only remedy, and it cannot be shortened.

Provenance matters as well as quality. Teak is a high-value hardwood and the supply chain deserves scrutiny: species, origin and legality of harvest. We can confirm in writing the species and source of the timber used in your order, and we would encourage you to ask that of any manufacturer, not only us.

Packaging and Transit Protection

High enclosed arms are the widest and most exposed part of this sofa, and they take any impact first when the piece is carried through a doorway. Both arms are wrapped in high-density foam over their full height and depth, with additional corner protection at the point where the arm turns forward.

The gently bowed back has no flat face to rest against, so the crate is built to the plan of the sofa with foam supporting the curve continuously rather than at two end points. The small pierced crest, the outer arm scroll panels, the cabriole legs and the base motif are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the champagne finish. Oatmeal linen is covered in soft breathable cloth with a moisture barrier outside - never sealed plastic against a pale natural fibre, which tide-marks from trapped condensation. Corner-guarded, foam-blocked, marked for orientation and lifting points, photographed sealed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Every sofa is built to order, and seasoning time is built into our schedule rather than treated as optional - it is the main reason our lead times are what they are. Typical build is 9 to 11 weeks from order confirmation, longer for larger sets since each piece is carved, finished and upholstered individually. We share progress photographs after the frame is made, after finishing and after upholstery.

Delivery is free anywhere in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and elsewhere. Our team unloads, unwraps, places and levels the sofa and fits the cushion at your address. Confirm doorway, stair and lift dimensions in advance and measure to the outside of the high arms, which are the widest point - not the seat width. On a made-to-order piece we can adjust arm width to clear a tight access route if you tell us before manufacture. International orders quoted case by case.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery and the hand-carving. If a joint works loose, a curved member fails or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, dragging, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately.

Natural variation in grain and colour between boards is a characteristic of solid timber and is not a defect - it is, in fact, the proof that the frame is solid wood rather than a printed veneer. Teak also darkens slightly with age and light exposure, which is normal and generally considered desirable. Vacuum the linen weekly with a brush attachment; linen shows watermarks readily, so blot spills straight down and let them dry naturally rather than adding water. Dust the champagne show wood and carved panels with a dry soft brush. Because the arms are high and enclosed, dust collects where the seat meets the arm - clear those corners weekly. Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight.
