The Story Behind This Sofa

A three seater and a two seater are the two main sofas. A single chair - sometimes called a one seater or an armchair - completes the seating. Packaging and Transit Protection

A pierced openwork back is the most fragile structure in our sofa range, because the carving spans the full width with little solid material behind it. It is foam-cradled continuously along its length rather than blocked at the ends, so no span is unsupported, and rigid boards are fitted to both faces so nothing can press into the openings.

The tall crest and both pierced arm scrolls are unshipped where the construction allows and wrapped individually in foam shaped around the openwork. The floor-level pierced apron is cradled along its full length. Upholstery is covered in soft breathable cloth with a moisture barrier outside it. On a full set, every crate is labelled to its piece and cushions are bagged and labelled individually, since cushions across a set look similar but are cut to different sizes. All crates are corner-guarded, foam-blocked on every face, marked for orientation and lifting points, and photographed sealed before dispatch.

Every piece is built to order. Typical lead time is 10 to 12 weeks for a single sofa and 14 to 16 weeks for a full 7 or 9 seater set with chairs, settee and centre table, because each frame is carved, pierced, gilded and upholstered individually - a set is not one long sofa. Order the complete set together wherever possible, since gold leaf and dyed fabric both vary between batches and a piece added later will not match precisely. Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery and the hand-carving across every piece in the set. If a joint works loose or a pierced carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately.

An openwork back needs handling care that a solid-backed sofa does not. Never push or pull the sofa by its back rail - on this design that rail is pierced carving, not structure, and it will break. Move it by the seat frame, lifting rather than dragging, with a person at each end. Clean the pierced screen with a clean dry soft brush, working from the top down; a cloth catches on the openwork and can snap the finest ribs. Because the back is open, dust settles on both faces, so brush the reverse as well. Never use liquid cleaner on the gold leaf. Vacuum upholstery with a brush attachment and blot spills straight down. Keep the set out of direct sunlight.
