White Carved Teak Bed with Tufted Footboard and Greek Key Fret

This is a solid teak wood king size bed in white with silver-grey highlighting, built with three deep-buttoned panels across a tall footboard and Greek key fretwork carved into the flat bands of both ends. The headboard carries three shaped tufted panels beneath a pierced openwork crest of scrolls and carved rose sprays, rising to a carved urn at its apex. The footboard repeats the arrangement lower down, with its three buttoned panels divided by carved cartouches and framed by scrolled volutes at the corners.

Carved rose sprays, meander fret bands and scrolled feet complete the frame, and two matching bombe-fronted bedside chests are supplied in the same white and silver treatment. Every Brown Rabbit bed is made to order, so the size, the upholstery, the finish and any storage in the base are settled with you before production and the exact dimensions confirmed in writing. The solid teak frame and joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the bed, delivery anywhere in India is free, and the piece is guaranteed to arrive dent-free with the carving intact.

Greek Key Against Rococo Scrolls

The meander, or Greek key, is one of the oldest repeating ornaments in existence and it is entirely geometric: right angles, fixed intervals, no movement. Rococo carving is its opposite, built on asymmetric curves and foliage that never repeats exactly. Combining them on one piece of furniture is unusual for good reason, since done carelessly it looks like two designs that arrived by accident. The rule applied here is territorial. Fretwork occupies only the flat bands, on the headboard uprights and across the footboard rails, where a geometric repeat can run cleanly. Everything shaped or curved, the crest, the cartouches, the volutes at the corners, is left to the scrollwork. Neither language is allowed onto the other one's surface.

The carved urn at the top of the crest is the piece that ties them together. An urn is a classical form, so it belongs to the same world as the fretwork, but it sits at the apex of an openwork rococo crest of scrolls and rose sprays. It is also the most difficult element to carve on this bed, since it stands almost free at the top of the pierced section with very little material supporting it, and it has to be cut in the round from the same block as the scrolls flowing around it. Master Indian artisans carve, finish and upholster each of these by hand, and the images here show the actual piece.

Protecting an Almost Free-Standing Carved Urn

The urn at the top of the crest is the single most exposed carved element on any bed we make. It stands at the highest point, surrounded by pierced openwork rather than solid timber, and there is nothing near it to take a knock on its behalf. It travels in a dedicated void: the foam around the crest is cut so the urn and the pierced scrolls either side of it sit entirely clear, with the padding bearing only on the solid frame below. A rigid guard is fitted over the apex so nothing can strike it in handling.

The Greek key fret bands present a subtler problem. Fretwork is a series of sharp internal corners, and any packing material pressed hard into it will emboss the finish along every angle, which on a white surface shows immediately. Those bands are faced with a soft low-density layer that sits against them without being driven into the cuts. The three buttoned panels on each end travel with no strapping across the tufting, and all white surfaces sit against clean undyed material that cannot transfer colour. Everything is rigid-crated and strapped, with the two chests boxed separately and their drawers immobilised. Dent-free, unmarked and with the carving whole, or we make it right.

Free Delivery Across India on This Made-to-Order Bed

Delivery is free everywhere in India, with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. Production is where the time goes on this design, because it carries two separate kinds of ornament and both are cut by hand: the pierced crest and rose sprays are slow rococo carving, and the Greek key fretwork is exacting geometric work where every interval has to be identical or the whole band reads as wrong. After carving comes the white finish in several coats and the silver highlighting, then upholstery and buttoning of six separate panels.

We give you a realistic completion window once your specification is confirmed, and if you are working to a fixed date we will say at enquiry whether it can be met. The bed ships in contour-cut multi-layer packing under our dent-free arrival guarantee and you are kept informed from dispatch through to arrival. Our team assembles it in your bedroom and we ask that you inspect the crest, the fret bands and the buttoning while they are still there. This headboard is tall, so send us your ceiling height with your room dimensions, and mention any narrow staircase, small lift or tight doorway at enquiry.

What Is Guaranteed on This Bed

The solid teak frame and joinery are covered for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the life of the piece with no expiry. On this design the clause that matters most is the one covering the pierced crest and the carved urn at its apex, which stand almost free at the top of the headboard with limited supporting material. Those sections are cut from continuous stock rather than assembled from applied pieces, and the junctions where they meet the headboard frame are cut and pinned rather than glued flat. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through oils within the timber rather than through any coating.

The white and silver finish, the upholstery, the foam and the buttoning sit outside the structural warranty. A tall tufted footboard takes more contact than most, since it is where bedding is pulled across and where people lean, and it will show that first. We put that here rather than in fine print. We refinish and reupholster our own beds at any point in their life at an honest price, and because every element was carved in our workshop we can recut a single rose spray, fret band or section of the urn without replacing the whole component. Keep the bed indoors, away from prolonged direct sun, and do not modify the frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

It is the meander, a geometric repeating fret of right angles that comes from classical architecture. Here it is carved into the flat bands of the headboard and footboard, deliberately kept off the curved sections so it does not clash with the rococo scrollwork around it.

It is taller than most, and that is a real consideration. It makes the bed harder to sit on at the foot and adds visual weight from the doorway, which is the point of the design. If you regularly get in and out over the foot of the bed, this is not the right choice and we will say so.

In position it is sound, but it is the most exposed element on the bed, standing almost free at the apex surrounded by openwork. Never lift or move the bed by the crest and do not hang anything from it. In transit it travels in a dedicated foam void with a rigid guard over the top.

Yes, and on this design a strong colour behaves well because the upholstery is split into six smaller panels rather than two large ones. Deep blue, olive, oxblood and charcoal all read as accents against a white frame. Ask for swatches before confirming.

Yes. An all-white version with no metallic highlight is available, and it is a considerably quieter piece; the carving then reads on depth alone. Gold, champagne and antique gold highlighting are also available on the same carving if you want more contrast.

The headboard is tall and the crest is designed to be seen with clear wall above it. In a room with a low ceiling it will look cramped. Send us your ceiling height at enquiry; we can reduce the crest height, and if the proportions still will not work we will tell you rather than take the order.

The bed and two matching bombe-fronted bedside chests in the same white and silver treatment. Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance charge. The crest, the urn and the fret bands are each protected differently in transit, and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.
