Seater counts are less precise than buyers assume, and it is worth knowing how they are actually arrived at.

A sofa is described by how many cushion positions it has, not by how many people can physically sit on it. A three-cushion sofa is a three seater even if it is long enough for four, because the fourth person would have to sit across a join - uncomfortable, and it looks wrong. Conversely a single bench seat of the same length has no joins at all, so it genuinely flexes: three people in comfort, four when the family arrives.

Seat width per person is the number that actually matters. Comfortable is around 22 to 24 inches each; anything under about 20 becomes tight for adults. Multiply by the seats you want, add the arm widths, and you have your minimum sofa length - which is exactly the calculation we run when someone tells us they want a seven seater in a room that will not take one.

Bench seats also wear more evenly, because people do not always sit in the same three spots.

Packaging and Transit Protection

A full-width bench cushion is the largest single upholstered component we ship and the most easily deformed. It travels flat, never folded or rolled, in its own bag with rigid support beneath its full length - a bench cushion creased in transit holds that crease for months. Its brush fringe is combed straight, tissue-wrapped and protected with standoff blocking so nothing presses on it.

The floor-level pierced plinth is foam-cradled along its entire length and the crate is built so the sofa rests on its frame rather than on the plinth. The pierced crest, both carved oval medallion panels and the gilt scroll arms are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the champagne leaf. Upholstery is covered in soft breathable cloth with a moisture barrier outside - pale linen marks readily from trapped condensation. Corner-guarded, foam-blocked on every face, marked for orientation and lifting points, photographed sealed before dispatch.

Every sofa is built to order, and on this design we confirm seat width per person, seat depth and arm height alongside the seat count - the proportions are the point of the piece, so they are set to you rather than to a standard. Typical lead time is 9 to 11 weeks from order confirmation, longer for larger sets since each piece is carved, leafed and upholstered individually. We share progress photographs after carving, after finishing and after upholstery.

Our team unloads, unwraps, places and levels the sofa, fits the bench cushion and combs out the fringe at your address. Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery, the carved plinth and the hand-carving. If a joint works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately.

A single bench cushion needs different care from divided cushions. It cannot be rotated between positions, so turn it over and end-for-end monthly instead - that is the only way to distribute wear on a one-piece seat, and skipping it is why bench seats sometimes develop a dip where the family always sits. Because the cushion is long and heavy, always lift it by its body with two hands rather than dragging it by the fringe or a corner seam. Brush the fringe downward with a soft brush, never a vacuum nozzle. Keep vacuum heads and mop handles clear of the floor-level pierced plinth. Blot spills on the linen immediately, straight down.
